Meret Oppenheim
Meret Oppenheim (Berlin, 1913 – Basel, 1985) was a famous swiss artist, known for being one of the leading figures of the Surrealist movement. Born in Berlin but raised in Switzerland, she studied art in Paris, where she came into contact with several surrealist figures, such as Pablo Picasso and Jean Arp. Her work is characterized by the exploration of the human psyche, desire and the contradictions of reality.
Her most famous work is undoubtedly Breakfast in Fur (1936). Oppenheim was one of the few women to play a significant role in the Surrealist movement and her art spanned from painting to sculpture, photography and object design.
Her style was marked by the use of unconventional materials, the exploration of the body and its sensuality in an ambiguous and unsettling way.
